Formative and Summative Continuum

Formative data and assessments occur during learning and are used as feedback for students and teachers.  Feedback is timely, specific and aligned to the learning target. 

These assessments are used to promote student growth, progress, and for teachers to adjust instruction to improve achievement.

Assessments are aligned to standards;  Learning targets on formative assessments match those that will be assessed on summative assessment

Summative data are used to determine whether students have learned what they were expected to learn.

Students can demonstrate their understanding by applying their knowledge through a varied process or product.

Students have had sufficient practice aligned to the learning target prior to taking the Summative assessment.
